Business Studies - A Level

What does the course aim to do?

  • Appreciate the contribution from individual businesses to entire markets and the broader economy.
  • Understand a range of concepts and to be able to use them in a variety of contexts.
  • Use and enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business and to think like a business leader.
  • Understand that business can be studies from a range of perspectives.

How will I be assessed?

Edexcel- All written papers

Paper 1: Marketing, people and global businesses, (Theme 1 and 4)- 2 hours -35%

Paper 2: Business activities, decisions and strategy, (Themes 2 and 3)- 2 hours- 35%

Paper 3: Investigating business in a competitive market, (pre-released context document Themes 1,2, 3 and 4) - 2hours - 30%

Am I suited to this subject?

You should possess an interest in the U.K and global businesses and economies and the way in which businesses operate and respond to economic change . To be successful you will need the ability to interpret mathematical and statistical material and to analyse the content of such data . Expression in good clear English is also essential.

Where will it lead in the future?

This subject can lead to degree courses in either Economics , Business Studies or Management . Alternatively students can progress into high level apprenticeships or careers in a variety of sectors applying the knowledge and skills developed through the course.

How will I study?

You will be involved in a combination of different types of work including note -taking, group work , essay writing , interpretation and analysis of written and mathematical data.

New concepts will be explained and discussed in lesson time , and you will be expected to show your understanding by linking these concepts to relevant and up-to-date case studies. 

What will I need to do myself?

You should normally expect to complete one homework per week, usually an essay , data response exercise or contextualised reading.

In addition you will need to do supplementary reading and to keep up to date through good quality newspapers, podcasts and business documentaries.
