What does the course aim to do?

Am I suited to this subject?
You should have enjoyed the GCSE chemistry course, particularly the practical work and have acquired a reasonable level of skill in handling apparatus. You need to be proactive in your learning and be willing to develop independent learning skills. Attitude is extremely important. We regard A-Level Chemists as students - people who are here to study. You will be expected to be highly motivated and to show this by conforming to expectations and deadlines and by a constructive approach to the achievements of the group as a whole.
Where will it lead in the future?
In addition to the intrinsic merit of the course Chemistry is an essential requirement for degree courses in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Food Science, Genetics, Physiology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, and Biotechnology as well as all types of Chemistry itself. It is also very useful as a qualification for many Biological courses, Ecology, Plant Science and Biomedical Sciences. For those intending to seek employment in chemical-related industries (e.g. paper, paint) it is an excellent preparation. A good grade in Chemistry is also very acceptable for many other degree courses and careers.
How will I study?
You will be required to attend chemistry lessons and do consolidation practical work. You will also be asked to do summary questions to reinforce learning. There is also the opportunity to attend chemistry clinic. It is also expected that you will do extra reading from departmental library books and magazines.
What will I need to do myself?
As a basic requirement a minimum of five hours at home plus a share of private study periods in school each week is necessary.
