Welcome

Canon Slade School has a long and distinguished history, originally founded in 1855 by the then Vicar of Bolton, Canon James Slade. Over that time the school has served families throughout Bolton and much farther afield in providing an outstanding education set firmly within a strong Christian ethos. We are blessed with a beautiful 57-acre site in the foothills of the West Pennine Moors.

Our motto “Ora et labora” (Pray and Work) is our guiding principle. It is this commitment to work and the Christian life that drives the success of the school and our ability to flourish in a constantly changing and challenging world. Our magnificent chapel at the front of the school bears witness to the centrality of our Christian faith. Our Christian ethos and values of compassion and love for one another allow each individual to grow in a safe, caring community which has high expectations for all.

I believe that every one of our students should have unlimited ambition to go on and become outstanding members of society. Our excellent relationships with parents and carers ensure a shared understanding and belief in the school’s values and aims, working in partnership to maximise and promote the value of education. Our school is a friendly, vibrant and exciting place in which every member of our school community is recognised and valued for the individual they are, made in the image of God, and where each is given every opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Canon Slade offers a broad and balanced curriculum at key stage 3 (years 7 to 9), which enriches and challenges all learners and enables them to develop academically, morally, spiritually, socially and culturally. At key stage 4 (years 10 and 11), the school offers a challenging academic GCSE English Baccalaureate core and a broad choice of option subjects. We encourage our learners to continue their education and offer a high quality and personalised curriculum in our sixth form.

The school has a well-deserved reputation not only for its academic work but also for Drama, Music, Sport and many other activities. We are in the top 1% of all schools nationally for sport. Our students progress onto Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, the Royal Northern College of Music and other world-class institutions each year and we also support students to gain apprenticeships and employment. We are a Gold Duke of Edinburgh direct entry centre and one of only three schools nationally to hold the distinguished Diamond Award for Cultural Diversity. Canon Slade School is also a Cross of Nails Centre for Reconciliation in association with Coventry Cathedral.

Thank you for your interest in our school. I am blessed to be Headteacher of Canon Slade School. There is so much to admire in what has been created here over the years, in a traditional but forward-looking school, with a large number of students and staff, but where each individual is known, nurtured and cared for individually. As a parent, myself, I know how important it is that every child is supported. We believe every child can achieve and we want our young people to be safe, happy and successful ambassadors for Canon Slade.

I hope you enjoy exploring the website to find out more about the school. We are also happy to hear from you by email, phone or in person.

Mr James Gilhooly
Headteacher
