Sharing the love of reading and books is something at Canon Slade library we do every day, however the focus of World Book Day does bring the whole school together to celebrate in style. This year we had more staff than ever dressing up as a book character and over 100 staff wore book character badges for students to seek out throughout the week. It was brilliant to see some departments taking up a book theme too.
It wouldn’t be book week without our annual World Book Day Bake Off. Students were invited to make and decorate a cake with a book theme. Our bakers created outstanding and imaginative cakes to an amazing standard. The judges Mrs. Teasdale and Mrs. Wilcock certainly didn’t find it easy to decide on the winners. “Every year we have cakes that are just incredible. This year’s overall winner is something we have never seen before. Well done everyone,” Mrs. Teasdale.
After the cakes had been judged and admired, the following day, they were cut up and sold to raise £215.00 for Book Aid International.
Following on the theme of food, the catering team had a special book themed menu. “It certainly had the children talking and the catering staff enjoyed talking about books amongst themselves too,” said Mrs. Wilcock. Thank you to Miss Suffield, St Wilfred’s secondary school for sharing this idea.
The Scholastic Book Fair has been in school with a fabulous collection of new book titles. Students have been able to exchange their World Book Day token for £1.00 off a new book or for a free World Book Day book. Over 300 year 7 and Year 8 students visited the book fair on World Book Day. Our pupil librarians and a couple of volunteer year 8 students helped to manage and promote the book fair. This year we sold £663.00 worth of books and therefore received 50% commission, so lots of new books to be added to the library. Thank you to all parents for supporting the book fair and for students for visiting and buying a new book.
Our World Book Day celebration ended with a group of Year 7 students competing in the Big Book Quiz at Harper Green School. The students had been preparing for weeks and achieved third place. Well done Year 7 you are our Reading Stars!
