Just to update you on the National Finals Tennis that both our Senior Boys and Senior Mixed Doubles teams qualified for, and competed in this weekend.
The Boys team finished 3rd overall (our best ever finishing position), and the Mixed Doubles team finished 7th overall. When you consider that qualifying for the finals is an achievement in itself, to achieve the placings that we did is amazing against “tennis academy” opposition from independent and boarding schools.
The Boys team only lost to the eventual winners, Magdalen College, on a match tie-break shootout by a score of 15-13. At one stage we were down by 9-4, but then managed to pull it back to 9-10 and had match point. We were desperately unlucky not to win that match, and because we won all our other matches it would have meant we qualified for the final had we won.
Statistically we also out-performed the finalists from the other pool in terms of game won:lost ratio (Hampton School), and two out of the top three best performing players in the finals were Canon Slade players – Will Hart 1st and Matt Bowers 3rd. This shows you the high level of performance that our boys brought to the competition.
The Mixed team had a very tough draw – Millfield (won it last year), Culford (No.1 seeds) and Strathallan (previously won the Boys, Girls and Mixed Doubles in 2015). We began by beating Strathallan which was a brilliant performance. Against Culford we needed to win one set to force a tie-break and were leading that set 5-1. Unfortunately the quality was too good and we lost it, along with realistic chances of getting through to the final (and Will Hart’s racket that got smashed to pieces in frustration 😂). Again, so close to a famous win! Last up was Millfield, we struggled in the first two sets and lost them easily, so we had two more sets to try and force a tie-break. Both sets were lost 7-5…again the story of the weekend, so desperately close to a win against such high quality opposition.
Our students performed unbelievably well, I’m very proud of them. They represented school perfectly and have broadened the reputation of our school.
Thank you to all the staff, family and students who were able to attend, the students really appreciate it and enjoy showing everyone their talents.
