Canon Slade have had a record breaking Senior Students Tennis season by reaching the National Finals of the LTA Senior Students competition with TWO of our teams. Both the Senior Boys and the Senior Mixed Doubles teams have successfully reached the finals weekend after wins against some very high profile opponents.
Our Boys team consists of Will Hart, Matt Bowers, George Lawson and Joe Rogerson. Competing in our Mixed Doubles team is Will Hart, Matt Bowers, Catherine Jameson and Amelia Kwiatkowski. We travelled far and wide this year and were victorious against Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Runshaw College, Tytherington School, Rainhill School, Ellesmere College and Wilmslow High School.
The finals take place at the National Tennis Centre for the North, which is luckily local at BOLTON ARENA.
The Boys competition gets underway on Friday 9th March at 9.15am and continues through the day on Friday, where two group matches will take place, concluding at around 6.30pm. The final Boys group match is played on Saturday 10th March at 9.15am. Should the Boys team win their seeded group, then a Boys final takes place at 12.45pm on Saturday.
The Mixed Doubles competition begins straight after the Boys competition ends, with two group matches being played on Saturday 2pm – 6pm. We have one final group match on Sunday 11th March at 9.15am, the finals format is the same as the Boys competition with a final taking place between the two group winners.
We have qualified for the National Finals in previous years, but it is very rare that we, or any other schools are successful in having two teams qualify for the finals weekend. In addition, the quality of opponents in Senior Tennis is very high with the majority of the teams having access to outstanding tennis facilities and coaching on their school site that they are able to use any time they like. Furthermore, we are one of only two non-selective, comprehensive schools to qualify. The remaining teams are all made up of boarding, independent, selective schools (Merchiston Castle School, Alcester Grammar, Colston’s School, Watford Grammar, Hampton School, Magdalen College, Sevenoaks School, Strathallan School, Millfield, Culford, Lincoln Minster, Moulsham High School, Peter Symond’s College and Eastbourne College).
Our students have shown fantastic attitude towards all of their fixtures, regardless of the level of opposition, they have committed to additional training sessions and seem to be very excited and motivated to compete in the finals weekend.
We wish them well and hope for a successful weekend of tennis!
